Women's Volleyball Soars: Can the U.S. Finally Land a Pro League?

Updated: Mar 29

The dynamic leaps, powerful spikes, and strategic rallies of women's volleyball take flight in the U.S. Despite consistent international dominance, a thriving professional league for these talented athletes has yet to be discovered. But with the sport's surging popularity, particularly among young girls, could this finally be the time for a successful pro league to take root?

Role Models for a New Generation

Studies by the Girl Scouts Research Institute show that having strong female role models is crucial for girls' development. These role models can inspire them to pursue their passions, challenge stereotypes, and develop a positive self-image. In a world often fixated on unrealistic beauty standards, the athleticism and strength showcased by female volleyball players offer a refreshing and empowering alternative. Especially following the social and emotional challenges brought on by the pandemic, young girls need inspiring figures more than ever.

A Sport on the Rise

While volleyball may not rival football or basketball in national popularity, participation numbers paint a different picture. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, girls' high school volleyball participation has skyrocketed by 40% since 2017, making it the fastest-growing high school sport in the country. This surge of involvement extends beyond high school, with USA Volleyball reporting a 9.6% membership increase in the 2022-23 season, the most significant jump since 1998.

Learning from the Past, Building for the Future

The road to a booming professional league has yet to be smooth. Previous attempts like Major League Volleyball (1987-1989) and the U.S. Professional Volleyball League (2002) ultimately folded. However, the current landscape is unique, with three new leagues vying for attention: Athletes Unlimited, League One Volleyball (LOVB), and the Pro Volleyball Federation (PVF).

A Focus on Sustainability

The key to success for these leagues might lie not in replicating past models but in fostering a love for the sport at the local level. LOVB seems to be taking this approach, focusing on regional teams that could create a strong connection with local communities. This approach could cultivate a more sustainable fan base compared to a heavy emphasis on travel volleyball, which has been a focus of other leagues.

The Future of Women's Volleyball

The dream of a thriving professional league for women's volleyball in the U.S. is closer than ever. By nurturing young talent, strategically promoting the sport's fast-paced action and compelling stories, and securing the right sponsors, these new leagues can turn that dream into reality. Imagine a future where young girls across the country can see themselves reflected in the success of professional athletes, fueled by a love for the game nurtured in local communities. That's a set worth winning.
